Building Skills

Every dog has the capacity to learn. Every dog wants to communicate with the people they love. And every dog thrives when given the tools to navigate the world with confidence.

Building Skills is about exactly that: giving your dog a shared language. Not commands barked from a position of authority, but a two-way conversation built on mutual trust and positive communication. When your dog knows what you're asking, they're calmer, more confident, and far easier to live with. When you understand how dogs learn, training stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like one of the most rewarding parts of sharing your life with a dog.

At Good Boy Foundation, we use exclusively positive, reward-based training methods. No prong collars. No choke chains. No punishment. No yelling. The science is clear: these approaches cause fear, undermine trust, and often make behavior worse over time. What works — what genuinely, lastingly works — is helping your dog understand what you want and rewarding them generously for doing it.

What You'll Find in This Section

  • Basic Obedience: The Foundation Commands — sit, down, stay, come, leave it, drop it, loose leash walking, and place. The everyday skills that keep your dog safe and make every outing easier.

  • Dog Buttons & Communication — an introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) buttons, what the research says, and how to start building a vocabulary with your dog.

These skills build on each other. A dog with a solid "sit" has the beginnings of impulse control that makes every other skill easier to teach. A dog who knows "come" reliably can be given more freedom safely. A dog who understands "leave it" is a dog you can trust around more of the world.

Take your time. Revisit often. And remember: every session — no matter how short — is an investment in your bond.
